Chairman James S. Tisch and Executive Vice Chairman Malcolm Hoenlein of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations announced yesterday that a large delegation of American Jewish leaders will pay an historic visit to Bulgaria and Romania in conjunction with the Conference’s Annual Leadership Mission to Israel.

The delegation will visit at the invitation of Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Simeon Saxe-Coburg Gotha, and Romania’s President Traian Basescu.

More than 50 representatives of the Conference's member organizations will participate in the six-day mission prior to travelling to Jerusalem. Tisch and Hoenlein said, “Our visit will provide an opportunity for American Jewry to show appreciation for and strengthen Bulgaria’s and Romania’s support for the United States and their friendly relations with Israel.

These countries are our two newest NATO allies, and their soldiers serve alongside ours in Iraq and Afghanistan. After consultations, we decided to visit these key countries in the “New Europe.”

As future members of the European Union, they will play an important role in Europe’s policy formulation. We will be discussing the key issues of today and those likely to be faced in the future.

A special focus will be on the war on terrorism. We will also discuss the actions of the Bulgarian and Romanian regimes during the Second World War and how those histories are studied today.
