Rumsfeld met Romanian MoD Minister

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld arrived to Nice (France) on Wednesday to attend the meeting of NATO defense ministers here this week.

Between Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld arrival yesterday morning and his late-afternoon meeting with reporters, the secretary visited the USS O'Bannon, a Navy destroyer anchored offshore, and participated in bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Romania and Spain.

Afterward, he was scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and participate in a working dinner. During the meeting with the US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Romanian Defense Minister Teodor Atanasiu said that Romania wants to reorient its contribution inside the international coalition efforts in Iraq towards training and equipping the Iraqi forces, reeds a Romanian MoD release.

Minister Atanasiu also said that the Romanian Defence industry is manufacturing equipment that could answer to the needs of the Iraqi army, and Romania would co-ordinate its actions in that particular direction with the US.

Rumsfeld also said that Romania proved to be a reliable partner for the US and NATO, estimating that the two countries will develop both their bilateral relations inside the Strategic Partnership and the co-operation inside the North-Atlantic Organization.
