President Basescu enthusiastic on regional strategies

Bucharest, March 24 – Romanian President Traian Basescu returns confident from visit in Rome.


Shortly after landing at the Henry Coanda airport in Bucharest, Basescu showed optimism on the issue of getting the European Parliament's required political support in the in the vote on "Avis Conforme" for Romania's Accession Treaty, on April 13, as well as for the signing of accession treaty on April 25. Speaking about Italian help on the EU accession bid, Basescu stated that in Rome all political forces alike are backing up Romania's efforts.


Basescu also displayed enthusiastic views on regional issues. Thus, following discussions with PM Berlusconi, Romanian President announced that Italy joined a strategic working group for the Black Sea region – group now to include UK, US, Germany, Italy an Romania.


Basescu reminded that 50 percent of the European oil supply originate in the Black Sea basin and launched the idea of internationalising Black Sea – which for now is formally controlled by Russia and Turkey.


President Basescu added that PM Berlusconi looks for Romania's stronger help for providing stability in the Western-Balkans. This particular issue was not emphasized by Bucharest so far, but it seems the Italian premier found an eager enough Basescu when it comes to deeper engage himself in regional strategic schemes.
