Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister in UK visit

London, March 14 – Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, attended anniversary seminar on the occasion of 125 years of diplomatic relations between Romania and the United Kingdom.

Last week, before the event, the British Ambassador Quinton Quayle said that "the visit of His Excellency Mihai Razvan Ungureanu to Britain, 11-15 March, represented a further step in the development of the UK’s Strategic Partnership with Romania."

Foreign Minister Ungureanu held talks with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Minister of Europe Denis McShane and Tony Blair’s Adviser for EU Affairs. The main themes covered were expected to be bilateral relations, regional issues and EU accession, bearing in mind that the UK will hold the Presidency of the EU from July to December this year.

The UK Ambassador paid tribute to the dynamic diplomacy of the new Foreign Minister and said that British ministers were particularly looking forward to hearing Foreign Minister Ungureanu’s views on developments in the Black Sea area, Ukraine and Moldova.

The British government were also interested in exchanging views with Foreign Minister Ungureanu on Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans where the United Kingdom and Romania are working closely together in international peace-keeping operations.

Yesterday, on Monday, at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, 125 years of diplomatic relations between Romania and the United Kingdom were celebrated. The anniversary seminar was organized organised under the aegis of the UK Foreign And Commonwealth Office, the School of Slavonic And East European Studies and the Embassy of Romania in London.

The key-note speech was delivered by Dr. Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania. Later in the evening, at Chatham House, Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu had spoken at a conference on “Romania and EU Membership: Regional Implications”.
