Bucharest, April 5 – On Monday, President Traian Basescu offered an official reception to mark the "NATO Day" in Romania. Officials, ambassadors, academia and mass media personalities attended the event.

President Basescu held a speech to underline the Romania's contribution during its first year of full NATO membership.

Basescu said that Romania is now part of all significant NATO or NATO member states actions in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Meanwhile, Romania tries to promote it's own national interests within the Alliance. "At this stage, we assume that the promotion of a dynamic strategy to stabilize the region at the East of Romanian borders – which are the Eastern NATO borders either – should be also seen as the interest of NATO and EU member states, " President Basescu said.

"We think we have both a moral and a political task to bring peace in the Black Sea region, to provide support to democratic and stable regimes – task to which we have invited to take part to the NATO and EU states," Basescu stated.

Western-type democracy should be spread to Rep. of Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia and in the West-Balkans – region to be granted an Euro-Atlantic solution. President Basescu promised that Romania will remain an active NATO member and will fulfill its engagements both within the Alliance and regarding bilateral partnerships.

Basescu concluded by thanking Romanian armed forces now fighting on the battlefields and to families of those who gave their lives for their fatherland.
