Four nations military drills in Romania (Sep 12, 2005)

BUCHAREST -- The troops from Great Britain, the United States, Romania and Hungary wrapped up a six-day military exercise Friday in Romania's Black Sea city of Constanta. In the drills coded "Cooperative Sarex 2005," terrorists weresupposed to be enemy and the troops performed mock rescue to free people on planes and ships hijacked by terrorists.


Officials said the aim of the war games was to improve the troops' skills and capability in rescue operations.

On Friday, more than 200 soldiers, parachutists, anti-terror special forces and military medics carried out a simulated rescue of survivors on a hijacked plane at the Constanta military airport.

During the drills, Romania mobilized eight helicopters, two fighter jets, two military transportation planes and a warship. In addition, the Interior Ministry troops, anti-terror special forces, and medical staff from the Health Ministry, the Red Cross and hospitals took part in the exercises. Bulgaria, Moldova, Serbia and Montenegro, and Ukraine watched the manoeuvres as observers.
