On Saturday, Sep 17, Romanian PM Tariceanu inspected works at the Bucharest-Constantza highway and stated that new Drajna-Fetesti section is likely to be completed in 2006, instead of April 2007.

"We want the Dreajna-Fetesti section to be inaugurated next year, before the April 2007 deadline. We have to discuss with the general contractor and see whether the deadline might be 2006, a series of additional works are to be accomplished afterwards, because they do not influence directly the motorway functioning," Prime Minister has stated.

When answering the press about the progress of the Bechtel highway contract, the Premier Calin Popescu-Tariceanu has shown that the contract must observe the Romanian legal framework.

"The Ministry of Transport has a special responsibility in this respect, because a lot of money is involved. The contract must comply, in all its details, with the Romanian law, in order to give to the Minister the possibility to make the payments without being later made accountable for it (...). The discussions have been carrying out for a long time. A negotiation does not depend only on the good will of a single party. The American company should have the necessary availability to understand that the laws must be observed and everything must be developed legally," the Premier added.
