President Basescu: I shall get involved in case the ruling Alliance will significantly stumble (Jul 28, 2005)

Bucharest, July 28 – Today, Romania's President Traian Basescu met with the foreign press association at Cotroceni Presidential Palace. Basescu said that Romania is progressing step by step in meeting its commitments to become a member of the European Union in 2007 as planned. He also said he will act in order to stabilise the ruling Alliance.

As about the status of the ruling “DA Alliance” (formed by the Democratic Party and the National Liberal Party), President Basescu said he did not ask for Liberal PM Tariceanu resignation, while instead it was only a matter of launching procedures for early elections, procedures that had to stop as PM Tariceanu decided otherwise.

President Basescu denied any would-be Governmental crisis and said it was merely a “politicians’ rumour inducing the crisis perception.” However, Basescu admitted that things did not happen smoothly enough, as at first the Alliance decided in favour of early elections; then everything turned around following PM Tariceanu’s personal decision against early election this autumn.

According to Basescu, the greatest danger of the Government in place would consist in compromising with the opposition Social-Democrat Party – fact that would result into delaying economical reforms and fight against corruption.

President Basescu stated he will not permit things to go wrong with this respect. “I am basically interested in ‘DA Alliance’ good functioning. I shall get involved in case the Alliance will significantly stumble. Likewise I shall get involved in case the disputes within the National Liberal Party will result into crisis,” President Traian Basescu bluntly said.

Later, this day, PM Tariceanu stated that he understands President Basescu’s good will, but now there is not the case of any crisis within the ruling Alliance. Should the PM be right, no Governmental problems had to occur. On the contrary, today the most popular Liberal minister (Mona Musca) resigned from Cabinet.

Moreover, even if the MPs just gave a confidence vote to PM Tariceanu, today, the Parliament did not pass some Govt. urgency ordinances. And this seems to point out precisely an actual Governmental crisis.
