Bucharest – Romanian President Traian Basescu yesterday met Stephen J. Hadley (the US president's national security adviser). During the meeting, there were discussed issues regarding military cooperation in Iraq and Afghanistan, the future US military facilities in Romania, UN Security Council activity under Romanian chairmanship and security in the Black Sea and Western Balkan regions.

A press statement followed the talks and Mr. Hadley said “we are here to thank Romanian Government and Romanian people for helping us under many circumstances.” He underlined that “USA and Romania are strategic partners. We are allies in fighting terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are allies in promoting democracy and we praise Romanian President’s help with this respect.” (…) “As strategic partners, we have discussed the means of boosting freedom, democracy and security in the Western Balkans and the Black Sea region.”

When asked about the future US military facilities in Romania, Mr. Hadley said: “At this stage, we are about to finalize and sign and accord with this respect.” President Basescu mentioned the possible locations of the US military Bases – Babadag, Constantza and even Fetesti (all three in the Eastern Romanian province of Dobrogea, near the Black Sea coast).

Stephen J. Hadley’s visit in Romanian is just his second mission abroad since he took office as US president's national security adviser.

On Sunday evening, Mr. Hadley arrived in Moscow to meet President Vladimir V. Putin and a range of Russian national security officials. The American efforts to exert more pressure on both North Korea and Iran - questions on which Moscow and Washington have been deeply divided - are expected to figure in his discussions.
