Romania's President Traian Basescu was present at the American Cultural Centre in Bucharest for the 9/11 victims’ commemoration ceremony.

Basescu said he is confident that “no terrorist organization actually thinks it would be possible to defeat the civilisation of the democratic world, and this is why terrorists only hope to overcome the feeling of personal freedom in individuals. But the freedom granted by democracy to us all is as precious as life itself. The evolution of the modern mankind cannot subsist in the absence of freedom. We’d surrender any hope for a decent future if we accept anyone to terrorize us.”

In his opinion, Basescu labelled as being wrong all those politicians who think that terrorism may be defeated by the way of armed forces only.

“Terrorism already cultivates a context-free ideology, which is not centred on the Muslim traditions (…). We are forced that in time and by use of determination, financial resources and intelligence to defend our liberties,” Romania President added.

”Those almost 3,000 killed on 9/11 are not only dead Americans, they are also our dead people – the dead of the civilised world. In their name and in their families’ name, we have the duty to fight and devote in guaranteeing the freedom of each of us and all,” Basescu said.
