After returning from the last week EU summit in Brussels, President Traian Basescu said Europe asks for a well functioning judicial system in Romania. He also showed confidence over the country’s EU accession in January 2007.

Basescu stated on Friday that police/prosecutors/judges co-operation should enhance in order to efficiently boost fight against high level corruption. He added that once new homeland security bills passed solving anti-corruption cases will become more effective.

On Monday, President Basescu left for a visit to China. China is a priority for Romania's foreign policy not only because of recent tradition of the several-decades-long friendship, but also because this state became an important player on a global scale, said Romanian President Traian Basescu, ACT Media news agency reports.

''China plays a major role in Romania's foreign relations because we take tradition into account. We have been having diplomatic ties with China for 55 years and China was never hostile to us. Moreover, I would remind you of the year 1968 when Beijing warned the Soviet Union not to do in Romania what it did in Czechoslovakia and directly threatened with a conflict. These things cannot be forgotten by the bilateral history of the two countries,'' said Basescu.

President Basescu stressed his main purpose during the visit he is to pay this week to China is the strengthening of the political relations between the two countries.

Even if Basescu did not mention it, the energy issue could also be a sensitive topic under discussion.
