BUCHAREST - The Romanian Academy yesterday celebrated 140 years of official existence. The anniversary meeting, which took place in the presence of President Traian Basescu, was attended by over 40 heads and representatives of academies abroad.
In his opening address, Romania’s President Basescu emphasised the historical role played by the Academy, which he named “a pillar” of national values, stating that one cannot think about the culture development in Romania without remembering the prominent members of the academic institution throughout history.
He also added that the Academy, along with the Church, represented and still represents one of the most credible institutions. The President also said that “the Academy was not restricted to the borders of the Romanian State, but it became a partner in spreading science and culture at the European and global level.”
President Basescu awarded a number of distinctions and medals of the Romanian State to both representatives of foreign delegations and to members of the Romanian Academy. In turn, president of the Academy Eugen Simion offered the President a silver medal triptych issued by the National Bank of Romania in a limited edition, marking 140 years since the establishment of the Academy.
Academic bodies on the Romanian territory were initially established by princes of Moldova and Walachia back in the 16th century. Nevertheless, the modern Romanian Academy was created, by a state decree, on April 1st 1866.
