A Romanian Presidency press statement this morning said Basescu’s post-surgery hospitalised recovery is to take 7 days.
The press statement also mentioned that President Basescu resumed his head of state duties as the required operational telephone lines were already connected to his hospital room.
At a press conference (12:15 p.m. Bucharest time), the Austrian surgeons’ team provided the media with some medical details—namely that President Basescu surpassed well the surgery, he is now in good mood and no complications occurred so far.

Nicolae Vacaroiu—Chairman of the Romanian Senate—said today that Basescu called him at 11:00 p.m. last night asking him to take over presidential prerogatives during surgery—according to the country’s constitutional provisions. Vacaroiu said he refused to start the required complicated formal procedure for an only 3-4 hour office, but he agreed instead to informally fulfil Basescu’s duties and he contacted the presidential security advisor Sergiu Medar.
