Romanian Foreign Minister to resign (Feb 4, 2007)

Feb 4, 2007 (Romania Report)

On Feb. 2, Romanian foreign minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu was asked to resign by the PM. Ungureanu had been criticized by Tariceanu for failing to inform him about the October 2006 arrest of two Romanian citizens by coalition forces in Iraq, when they were caught filming in a US military base. Tady. Mr. Ungureanu announced he will file his resignation on Monday.

Apparently, Ungureanu reported on the situation only to the country’s President, Traian Basescu – and given the disputes between Basescu and Tariceanu, the PM himself showed particularly angry about the situation. The prime minister considers that defending the interests of Romanian citizens no mater where they are, is one of the Government's tasks. Since this did not happen, the prime minister could not take in time the measures for the sooner release of the Romanians and this led to the prolonging of their detention.

On Feb. 4, during a press conference, Foreign Minister Ungureanu said he will file his resignation at the PM’s office on Monday. Mr. Ungureanu publicly said he was wrong when he did not informed PM Tariceanu on the issue and, accordingly, he understands he must resign because he lost the PM’s confidence.

Romania currently has about 600 soldiers in Iraq. Also on Feb. 2, the two Romanian suspects were eventually freed by the U.S. military and arrived at the Romanian embassy from Baghdad.
