Romanian Democrats reiterate proposition to merge with National-Liberals (Oct 10, 2006)

Oct 10, 2006 (Romania Report)

Yesterday, Emil Boc—president of Romania’s Democratic Party (PD)—reiterated a merger proposition to the ruling ally, the National Liberal Party (PNL).

The merger planned by Democrats would give birth to a stronger political force to be further affiliated with the European People’s Party (EPP). Thus, the Democrat leader reiterates a proposition issued last winter.

The Liberal leaders asked for more time in order to asses the merger opportunity within the party but they did not show much enthusiasm regarding a possible EPP affiliation.

Last week, rumours emerged into the local media regarding behind scene manoeuvres to form an alleged ‘mammoth party’, able to provide parliamentary support for President Traian Basescu—although such a political project rather looked flamboyant.

Nevertheless, the above rumours were followed by this renewed Democrat-Liberal merger initiative. Provided that the Democrat party is constantly gaining points in the opinion polls, while the Liberal party is losing, the latter should carefully evaluate the consequences of a new refusal.

Today, the Liberals showed little interest in merging with the Democrats and chose instead to oust Theodor Stolojan—the former party president who managed to bring PNL to power back in 2004. Media sources say that Stolojan—together some other prominent Liberals who support President Basescu—is soon to launch a political programme with a view to takeover the PNL leadership. In case this leadership takeover fails, Stolojan is expected at least to attract a significant number of Liberals in a new political project.
