Parliamentarian debates meant to impeach President Traian Basescu, as requested by the opposition MPs and the ruling National Liberals, will take place on February 28, while debates on a referendum (asked by Mr. Basescu) on the issue majority nominal vote for legislative elections will occur on March 1, the joint permanent boards of the two chambers of the Romanian Parliament decided on Tuesday.
On February 28, MPs will also examine the opportunity of setting up a special commission to investigate the alleged anti-constitutional President’s actions.
MPs seem not to hurry in debating the President Basescu’s own proposals to change the party-lists vote with majority nominal vote in parliamentary elections. On the contrary, they intend to speed passing their own elections bill and turn the Basescu’s call for referendum into a pointless issue.
Mr. Basescu has said he did not need the approval of the Parliament to call for a referendum on the issue, because he only needs the parliament’s point of view – even if it would be a negative one. Instead, MPs in opposition said that Basescu’s proposals were too vague and would need detailed information for a proper consultation.
