Mar 7, 2008 (Romania Report)

Yesterday, Mar 6, President Traian Basescu received the visit of Austria’s Federal Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer, at the ‘Cotroceni Palace’ in Bucharest. The two head of states tackled regional and energy-related issues.

During talks, President Basescu outlined the outstanding co-operation of the two countries – as Austria is one of the top Romania’s economical partners, and added that Romania is highly interested in benefiting – by means of joint projects – from the Austrian expertise in accessing EU funds.

There were also discussed solutions to intensify multilateral co-operation within the “The Danube Co-operation Process” initiative – promoted by both Romania and Austria.

President Basescu reiterated the need for an EU stronger role in the Black Sea region and the support that Romania provides for speeding the EU integration process of the Western Balkans states and Rep. of Moldova. The Serbia-EU relationship was also mentioned, as both Austria’s Federal Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer and Romania’s President Basescu agreed upon the need of backing the country’s efforts to promote internal reforms.

Other topics discussed were related to the EU energy policies – Mr. Basescu underlining again the priority of building the Nabucco gas pipeline –, and the EU enlargement process.
