President Basescu paid an official visit in Iraq (Aug 10, 2006)

Romania will remove its troops only when the Iraqi Govt will ask for it, in agreement with the other allies,” President Traian Basescu said to Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, during an official visit to Baghdad, on Aug 9. Today, Basescu is also to visit Afghanistan.

Basescu and Talabani undertook talks, in Baghdad, on issues regarding the military, economic and political bilateral co-operation. Basescu said Romania is ready to help democratic institution building in the Middle East country.

President Basescu also met PM Nouri Al-Malaki in order to assess the actual opportunities for Romanian companies in the Iraki reconstruction process. Members of the cabinet in charge with economic sectors were also present at the meeting.

Later yesterday, President Basescu and the Chief of General staff Eugen Badalan visited Talil in order to meet the Romanian troops in the Camp Mittica there.

Today, Aug 10, Romania’s president Traian Basescu is visiting Afghanistan in order to meet President Hamid Karzai and Govt members. The main topics to be discussed are also related to democratic institution building and bilateral economic co-operation.

During talks with ISAF and OEF commanders the expected issues to be tackled are those regarding the international community commitment toward reinstatement of security and stability in Afghanistan with a view to the country’s political, economical and social reconstruction.

President Basescu is also to visit Romanian soldiers in Afghanistan.
