On Monday, Aug 6,
On the “Transfiguration Day”, Aug 6 1917, Romanian General Eremia Grigorescu chose not to retreat and attacked the German troops near Marasesti (South of Moldova province). That day, the Romanian army won its most glorious victory during the “Great War”.
Yesterday, the ninetieth commemoration festivity took place at the Heroes Mausoleum at Marasesti.
During his speech, President Traian Basescu said that the victory on Aug 6 1917 represents “perhaps the most glorious moment of in the history of the Romanian army and one of the most important in the Romanian nation history.”
“Marasesti, Marasti, Oituz, Soveja – these are the places names that make each Romanian soul vibrate with pride. In our hearts, these names are marking the heroic sacrifice of over 27,410 combatants – 610 officers and 26,800 soldiers – who died while defending the freedom of what was left from our country’s territory,” President Basescu said.
Mr. Basescu underlined that, in order to honour the sacrifice of our nation’s heroes, Romanians must always pay a lively tribute to the Romanian Army – the army which through its heroism at Marasti, Oituz and Soveja secured the foundations for the “Great Union” (i.e. shortly after the WWI, the Romanian provinces of Transylvania and Bassarabia united with the motherland).
